Lighting Design Project for Mineral Museum, Freiberg, Germany

The old palace of Freiberg, Germany, was turned to be mineral museum. Because of different functions, the architect had to adjust the space inside to suit the new criteria. He provided the area for exhibition but not the exactly interior design. The task was to design image of lighting atmosphere and interior as well. This design project was a 4-person group work.

Concept: Transition of Mineral from rocks in the mine to be fine minerals on the earth.

Lighting Ambiance: By using gradation of brightness and colours of each floor to represent the transition of mineral.

Light & Symbols

In Light & Symbols subject, every student had to analyze two of lighting symbols from his/her own culture. One was lighting symbols in the ancient time and the other was the modern lighting symbol.

Lighting Design for Entrance Hall of World-known Architect's Exhibition

The task is to design the room which is the entrance hall of a world-known architect’s exhibition by light and create the feeling of people when they walk pass this area and they can refer to the architect. I chose Antoni Gaudi for my design
As everybody may know, Gaudi is the designer in Art Nouveau movement. He got a lot of influence from the nature

In his design, he always used some creatures or something to be the features of architectures; for example, plant, chameleon, mask, helmet, dragon, etc.

He also loved to use textured materials, fragile materials like mosaics or small tiles.

With these characters, I used them to create my work. I designed the entrance hall like the dragon mouth. It can be separated in 2 parts. The first part is the mouth and the second part is the throat. For the mouth, I used black glossy mosaics lit by small dots of luminaires to make it like saliva. This area is dark like a cave. And for the throat, I used a white plastered wall with rough texture and lit by linear luminaires, like fluorescent. This area will be brighter than the mouth to make the feeling of a transitional space like the end of a cave. So people can feel that they will go into something special.

Wismar Town Hall Facade Lighting Design












This lighting installation was one part of the Wismar town square lighting exhibition. Our task was to light up Town hall building. The concept was the building could be a background of the lighting exhibition. At the left and right side of the facade, they were lit by white light with combination of red, green and blue light. When people walked pass the building, they had color shadows on the facade. For the interior, we put people-shaped carton paper in every window and programmed lighting inside to turn on and off randomly by time and position. So the overall lighting situation seemed to be plain but people could see the differences of lighting.

Neuruppin Town Square Lighting Design

Purpose of Neuruppin workshop was to develop lighting situation and to draw attention of the town officers into lighting development of the town. The workshop was separated into 3 groups. Each group took care each area. Gymnasium building, town square and Museum building. I was in town square group. The area included town square and the street which links the two buildings together. Concept of our group was 'the connection of streams of light' that was inspired by the association of many streams becoming a river.

Luminaire Design: My Local Hero

Wismar Town Square Lighting Design: Light of Wishes

The first workshop of my master programme. The task was to do the light installation in the market square of Wismar. This was a group task. We named our installation "Light of Wishes" followed our concept. The concept was people in town could make a wish and participate in our installation which was separated in 3 parts; town hall, Wasserkunst (or water tank pavilion) and market square itself. The town hall was designed to be the background of the installation. Its facade was lit by blue light and let interior lighting turn on. Wasserkunst was also lit by blue light and the inside with ripple lighting effect to represent its history. Market square was the main area. Swedish fire was put in the center of the area and accent the pattern of floor by using candle lights. Near the center, they had a sand dune, where the wish lights were put on, and a group of balloons, which people could stick their wish papers on.
